CHINGAY PROCESSION is regarded by other news media, as it is taken from the Chinese dialect Hokkien "chin yi" in pronunciation, which means true art.
In the past, Chingay procession was held in celebration with the birthdays of the Chinese deities or the procession of the Goddess of Mercy ( Guanyin ), its purpose was to worship and enjoy with the deity. During the earliest procession in more than 100 years ago, the earliest English newspapers Echo ( had stopped publication ) adopted the word CHINGAY PROCESSION for this special event. |

The organization of Penang Chingay transformed in line with time and produced various breakthroughs, among them was obviously from the celebrations of the birthdays of deities in the Chinese community to the multi-cultural organizations, its main aim was to promote tourism and develop the unique cultures among the various ethnic groups in Penang.
In the performing techniques of Chingay, there has also been huge breakthroughs and progress. From the traditional ground performance techniques, it has advanced to the air-borne and leaping acrobatics. These high-difficulty acrobatics were always well received and applauded by the spectators.
As a result, Penang Chingay is getting the full support of the communities, it has become the most favorite program of the local and foreign tourists!
The formation of Penang Chingay and the Pesta Festivals authority under the Penang state government which had listed Chingay as the main procession event, they were in fact the important reasons in upgrading the status of Chingay and making it renowned near and far. |
