| The selection of flag pole is very important
|
| |
The selection of flag pole is very important, it has to go through special handling to suit the requirements of the Chingay players, they are not to be easily broken and taken from anywhere anytime. Even for the overseas performance, the flag poles are transported by airplane, they should be more than enough in quantity to avoid any damages incurred.
Certainly the tactics of the Penang Chingay players keep improving and are innovative, as the Chingay Association goes in line with the sponsorships of Penang Tourism Authority, allocating sites for the regular practicing of the Chingay players from various areas, getting excellent response.
All along, Penang Chingay Association actively reflects the phenomenon of multi-racial community of Malaysia, it encourages the participation of the youths of Malays and Indians to take part in the Chingay practicing. |

Penang Chingay Association is also coordinating with the Lion Dance Sub-committee, usually a few days before the procession takes place, a Chingay tactics competition is held for the participating teams from various areas, the winners would be awarded with cash prizes. They are also requested to perform their Chingay tactics in the stage show before the VIP. This would enable the spectators to have more chances to admire the Chingay in short distance, as it would also encourage the serious learning and mastering on the Chingay tactics for the players.
In recent years, Penang Chingay has been more frequently invited to perform in overseas, the inviting countries include China, Australia, South Korea, Singapore, Thailand etc.
As mentioned above, the existence of Chingay has been 107 years, this also indicated that the Penang residents started to have a chance to view Chingay performance since 1900.
The Chingay procession during the earlier period must have the blessing of the deity and approval of the Goddess of Mercy ( Guanyin ) before it went on tour. But up to 1928, no matter how hard they worked, they could not obtain the approval of the Goddess of Mercy, they had no clear reason why it was so, they had to obey and not to go on tour.
Even though during that period there was no procession such as the Goddess of Mercy being organized, but when being invited by other civil organizations, the Chingay members from various related areas worked closely in responding to such requests. Especially so in 1957, they organized to participate in the Penang Municipal Council's centenary ( 100th year ) anniversary, unfortunately during that time it sparked off a racial conflict, causing loss of human lives. Fortunately with the mediation from people of various sectors, the conflict was resolved amicably. But the Chingay procession was put to a stop temporarily. In 1966, that was 9 years after the incidence, it was recalled by the Penang Municipal Council to restore the procession of Chingay in line with the promotion of tourism.
There are about two similar Chingay Association at the moment, besides the Penang Chingay Association, the other is the Province Wellesley Chingay Association. These two organizations are in very good terms in their cooperation to spearhead this cultural art to the final aim together.
